In response to the increasing pressure on the asylum system, the Belgian government has announced a temporary suspension of reception for single men seeking asylum.

The government has indicated that the reception suspension is temporary and will be regularly evaluated based on the current situation and the available capacity of reception centers.

In a first groundbreaking ruling, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has convicted Belgium for its failure to adequately provide reception facilities for asylum seekers. The judgment underscores the fundamental obligation of states to uphold the rights and dignity of individuals seeking refuge from persecution and violence (EHRM 31 oktober 2022, Camara/België nr. 49255/22).
